Middle School Students take part in Peer Mediation Workshop
September, 2009 - Nativity's 8th graders, along with representatitives from 6th and 7th grades, participated in a highly-rated "dispute settlement" series, entitled "Mediation for Kids". The program teaches children the skills they need to find creative and constructive ways to settle conflicts between peers before they escalate into violence. The program encourages self-esteem, and emphasizes the need to challenge students to become responsible decision makers.
The peer mediation workshop taught Nativity students not merely to recognize when conflict arises at school, but more importantly taught them specific skills to use in order to resolve the conflict. During workshops, our students worked through a number of dispute scenarios and practiced conflict resolution, with each student "mediating" a factitious conflict that arose between two classmates. The student mediator encouraged those in conflict to treat each other with respect and to ultimately come to a win/win solution.
Skills learned during these workshops laid a foundation for Nativity students to promote and encourage conflict resolution beyond the school setting - at home, in the workplace, and in the community.
