Middle School

Nativity offers a unique experience for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Recognizing the special needs of the adolescent age group, Nativity has built a Middle School program which is rigorous and academically challenging while incorporating programs that prepare young adolescents for the social and academic independence that comes with high school.

Our Middle School students are challenged to develop independent thinking and organizational skills while being observed and cared for by a team of teachers that understands their individual learning needs.

The uniqueness of the Middle School stems from being part of a “K through 8” program. With a balanced emphasis of personal support and academic rigor, our middle school faculty has an interdisciplinary team approach to developing each student’s learning plan. Each student has a Teacher Advisor and is provided time to meet with that advisor on a regular basis. Furthermore, our middle school students meet with faculty members and their parents to discuss their personal learning goals.

Curriculum

Features of Nativity’s middle school curriculum include project-based learning, student-led conferencing, peer-mentoring, service learning, and leadership opportunities.

Advanced Math is available for qualifying students, allowing them to work up to 3 grade levels above their current grade.

The successful ILA program incorporates a strong reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing curriculum. The 101 Book Challenge continues, placing emphasis on reading as a life-long skill.

Lablearner science curriculum at the middle school level further stresses independent critical thinking and problem solving skills while exposing students to a variety of in-depth topics in life sciences, chemistry, physics and environmental science.

The sacrament of Confirmation is received in 6th grade. As students prepare to become full members of the Catholic Church, an emphasis is placed on understanding their faith, the importance of service, and the higher level of responsibility in their faith that is expected of them. 7th and 8th graders continue this sacramental journey and learn how to make their Catholic faith a vital part of their life as they prepare to enter high school.

Technology skills are constantly drawn upon across the curriculum and various software applications are used for group and individual projects.  Exciting new additions to the technology department are netbooks, used for various in-class activities across all subject areas, and e-readers, offering a wide range of literature to our students in an appealing digital format.
