  HOME & SCHOOL

Purpose of the Home & School Association
The Home & School Association consists of all parents/guardians of children in our school.  Our purpose is to promote, support and enhance the school and its programs – by helping to develop, fund and run various initiatives for the school families and staff.  Dues of $35 are collected from each family to cover the costs of running school events and various teacher and student appreciation activities.

The H&S Association board (see list below) meets monthly to discuss upcoming events and day-to-day items related to their functions.

The Board
The Nativity H&S Board consists of committees that support school functions/activities.  Committee chairs, along with the executive committee, form the H&S Board which will meet monthly with Mrs. Johnston and Father Bell to review committee work, as well as teacher, student and parent priorities for the school.

We Need You!!!!!!  -- Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteering is a wonderful way to become involved and to get to know your child’s friends, the faculty and other parents. There are positions that meet all levels of skills and time commitments, so if you would like to get involved, we have a place for you!

Home & School Committees

Hospitality Committee
The Hospitality Committee coordinates the purchase and serving of refreshments and provides any other materials necessary to help make the membership feel welcome at the general H&S meetings, as well as additional parties and social activities that might be organized for school families to get to know one another better.

Publicity Committee
The Publicity Committee is responsible for publicizing school activities and events to parents, parishioners and the local community. The group makes sure that the school and church bulletin boards are updated with current photos.  Additionally, they strive to obtain free publicity in local papers by sending photos and articles on school events.

Fundraising Programs Committee
The Fundraising Programs Committee consists of the ongoing programs that raise money for the school: SCRIP, BoxTops for Education and Acme Receipts.  This Committee develops programs to increase participation among the school and parish families.  The Committee is also responsible for organizing and managing SCRIP sales times and venues, reconciling sales, making bank deposits and producing reports.

Lunchroom Parents Committee
The Lunchroom Parents Committee is the network of parent volunteers that give their time on a weekly, bi-weekly or substitute basis to help supervise children during lunch and recess.

Homeroom Parents Committee
Homeroom Parents work with the teacher of the class they are supporting to plan class events and to organize parent volunteers for the different events.  They also act as the communications link with parents in their respective class in situations such as school closings.

Communications Committee
The Communications Committee is responsible for ensuring that the weekly Communications envelopes are compiled and stuffed weekly, each Thursday morning.  The Coordinator for this committee assists Sister Mary Daniel with ensuring that the information and materials that are gathered weekly for parents’ consumption are meaningful and timely.

Faculty/Staff Appreciation Committee
The Faculty/Staff Appreciation Committee hosts events to honor the faculty and staff and organizes parent volunteers to support these appreciation events.  The H&S is hoping to organize more frequent (informal) appreciation events for our teachers and staff (i.e. implement a monthly initiative to bring in yummy baked treats for the faculty).

Marketing Committee
The Marketing Committee is responsible for developing and implementing programs that further enhance the awareness (among students, parents, teachers and the parish and the community) of the great happenings and results of Nativity BVM School.  With Sr. Mary Daniel and Fr. Bell, this committee plans and produces the School Newsletter two times per year and meets to develop priorities and implement initiatives.

The following committees are formed on an annual basis in support of school and fundraising events.

$10K Giveaway – Saturday evening in November
This annual school fundraiser is one of the two annual fundraisers that are organized in support of the school and parish.  Participation from all school families is desired in order to make this event a success.  Volunteer opportunities include: ticket sales, organizing / running gaming tables, obtaining food and drink donations, set-up and clean-up.

Bingo Night – Friday evening in January
This annual family fun night allows school families and other parishioners to get together for night of food, bingo and fun.  Low cost prizes are purchased by the organizers to make sure that all of the children win something.

Spring Gala – Saturday evening in April
The Auction is the school and parish's largest fundraising event. Close to a hundred volunteers worked together in 2004 to organize this event which raised in excess of $42,000 for the school and parish.  Volunteer opportunities include: obtaining donations of items to be auctioned, basket assembly, obtaining program book ads, publicity, and set-up and clean-up -- there is a job for every talent and interest.

Spirit Day – half day during last week of school
This annual event is organized by the Spirit Day Committee in conjunction with the Faculty and is designed to be a day of fun activities for the children.  Volunteer opportunities include: organizing and running of games, ordering/pickup of food and drink, set-up and clean-up.
