Elementary School
The elementary school program at Nativity affords each student the opportunity to realize his or her potential through the sequential development of basic skills needed for success. Small class size enables each student to experience a rich learning environment in an atmosphere that emphasizes the importance of responsibility and respect. Sacramental preparation includes Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist in the third grade.
Curriculum
The interdisciplinary approach assures relevance across the curriculum. As any content taught in isolation is less effective and less relevant, the integrated instruction at Nativity helps students gain lifelong skills through a deeper understanding of concepts and by building problem solving skills. Daily lessons include instruction in Integrated Language Arts, Math, Religion, Social Studies and Science. There are weekly lessons in Art, Music, Physical Education, Library, and Technology.
The use of Smartboards is integrated into the curriculum, and weekly computer lab allows young minds to become familiar with the most popular software and computer applications.
The Language Arts curriculum recognizes the relationship between reading, writing, speaking, listening and thinking skills. The Rowland Reading program in grades 1, 2 and 3 places special emphasis on each individual student’s reading skill development.
Math teaching strategies are interactive and varied, with a “hands on” philosophy, carefully planned so students confidently gain life-long skills. Students can be accepted into the Advanced Math program in 5th grade, prior to middle school.
Lab Learner is an entirely hands-on science curriculum designed
to build early critical thinking skills as students are introduced to science concepts.
Service learning projects and several field trips throughout the school year are recognized as an important part of the learning experience.
Each student is encouraged to meet the 101 Book Challenge through in-school silent sustained reading periods and personal motivation outside of school, with the goal of promoting a life-long love of reading.
A foundation for an understanding of the Catholic faith is learned through the study of basic teachings of the Catholic Church.
