ACADEMICS
“Rigor and Relevance” defines the curriculum at Nativity. Emphasizing skills needed in the 21st century, the curriculum is geared toward interdisciplinary learning with a focus on core academics. Beyond core academics, teachers encourage “stretch learning”, that beyond the minimum requirements, and “learner engagement”, motivating students to learn and develop personal skills.
At Nativity, small class sizes allow teachers the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of each student’s capabilities and are, therefore, better able to address situations where a child is having difficulties and/or needs to be challenged further. An on-site resource facilitator assures that the differentiated learning styles of our students are met.
Dedicated faculty members are the key to academic success at Nativity BVM. All teachers continually further their education through in-services, workshops and coursework at local universities. Individually and collectively, they are focused on bringing out the hidden talents in each child and helping each student become their best.
The curriculum at Nativity is in accordance with that set by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia for Preschool through Grade 8. To view the Archdiocesan Guidelines please visit

With its small class size and talented faculty, Nativity has the unique opportunity to augment this curriculum with innovative teaching methods. Our program offers an excellent learning experience while instilling Catholic values in our students.
LabLearner - Our science curriculum is the top-rated science program in the country. Nativity students experience science through this 100% hands-on lab-based program from Kindergarten through Grade 8.
Classrooms of the Future – Every classroom at Nativity is equipped with at least one computer, a projector and a Smartboard. Teachers have completely integrated the use of these Smartboards into their daily classroom curriculum, recognizing the need to familiarize students with technology in the 21st century.
Rowland Reading Program is a comprehensive core reading program designed specifically for the primary grades. The six levels contain sequential lessons usually taught during the three-year period from kindergarten through second grade. Handwriting, spelling, and simple grammar and mechanics are seamlessly integrated into the reading instruction.
101 Book Challenge –
All students at Nativity are challenged to read 101 books or the equivalent over the course of the school year, building comprehension, vocabulary, and literary skills. Most students meet this challenge, with many surpassing.
Project-based learning opportunities challenge students academically while also developing oral presentation and social skills. Each year, Nativity participates in several in-school and outside-hosted project-based learning activities.
Peer-Mentoring – This program evolved from recognizing the need of today’s students to express their feelings in a safe and controlled environment. Student-led bimonthly meetings allow students to discuss among themselves, with faculty advisors present, issues and concerns, and as a group recommend possible solutions.
Service Learning - Each grade takes part in at least one year-long service project as a way to foster an awareness of the needs of others and, most importantly, to actively help others in need.
Spanish – Beginning in preschool to 8th grade, Nativity students
benefit from the introduction of the Spanish language.
Sacramental Preparation– The sacrament of Reconciliation is received in 3rd grade, in preparation for First Holy Eucharist in the spring of that year. Confirmation is conferred in 6th grade.
Faith Formation - The foundation for an understanding of the Catholic faith is learned through the study and practice of basic teachings of the Catholic Church. Learning to live with faith rooted in Gospel values is central to our mission as a Catholic school.
Academic Awards – Students are recognized for their achievements each trimester. Awards for Academic Excellence, First Honors, Effort, Better Me, Religion, ILA, Math, and other areas acknowledge students for their efforts, and motivate all students to do their best.
Terra Nova Testing – All Nativity students are
assessed annually using the Terra Nova Standardized Testing, used throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Scores are used to assess strengths and needs of students and curriculum.
Fine Arts - Preschool through 8th grade experience Music Appreciation and Music Theory during a weekly class. Additionally, students develop visual art skills with weekly Art class. Students may opt to take instrument lessons and join the school band.
